Theresia Bastion
Only fragments of Timișoara’s former bastioned fortress survive. Maria Theresia Bastion is a useful place to understand the scale of those defences.
More than a brick wall
The bastion is the largest surviving part of the bastioned fortifications. Its spaces now also have cultural and commercial uses. Read its shape as part of a larger defensive system, not as a freestanding castle.
Look through the arcades
Notice the thickness of the walls, the vaults and the contrast between the exterior and courtyard. A wider photograph explains the volume; a view from an accessible passage shows the depth of the masonry. The guide’s illustration is an editorial interpretation, not an access plan.
Between two walks
Combine the bastion with Union Square for a walk through Cetate. If continuing towards Fabric, check pedestrian crossings and the route ahead. Exhibitions, venues and events inside have their own opening hours and rules.
