Two landmarks, one perspective

The Palace of Culture stands at one end and the Metropolitan Cathedral at the other. The Opera façade combines Duiliu Marcu’s monumental central arch from the 1930s with decorated side sections. Ion Traianescu’s cathedral has a very different silhouette and architectural vocabulary.

Look at the sides as well

Do not limit your visit to the two ends. Look up at bay windows, gables and balconies along the promenade. This page’s historic image shows Corso in the 1920s: it is an archive document, not a photograph of the square today.

A place of memory

The square and Opera balcony are landmarks of the December 1989 Revolution. Our thematic walk provides stops and a chronology; a façade photograph alone cannot explain the full history. Continue towards Liberty Square or the Bega.
