Cetate · TIMIȘOARA
Union Square · Piața Unirii
A good first encounter with Timișoara: Baroque façades, buildings from different periods and a square worth exploring slowly.
Reading the old fortress district
The square appears in eighteenth-century city plans. The Roman Catholic cathedral, Serbian cathedral and Baroque Palace are its defining landmarks. Its buildings do not all belong to one period: later changes are part of the story.
What to notice
Look at each side of the square, then find Brück House and the Baroque Palace portals. Compare window outlines, colours and carved decoration. The stone paving and generous open space are as much part of the experience as the façades.
Where to go next
Continue towards Liberty Square and Victory Square, or towards Theresia Bastion. The Baroque Palace houses the National Museum of Art; check exhibition opening hours and tickets separately before planning an indoor visit.
