First, Johnny Weissmuller
Johnny Weissmuller was born in Freidorf on 2 June 1904. The neighbourhood name may surprise anyone who associates him only with American cinema. This story is better introduced through the person and his sporting achievement, rather than a fictional character. Freidorf is the local biographical connection; his Olympic career was representing the United States. [1]
Five gold medals and a screen career
His record includes five Olympic swimming gold medals and a water-polo bronze. His fame as an actor, including the role of Tarzan, followed an exceptional sporting career. That is why we use Johnny Weissmuller’s name in the title: it was one of Tarzan’s performers who was born here, not the fictional character. Nor was he the first actor to play the role. In 1924 he won gold in the 100 m freestyle, 400 m freestyle and 4 × 200 m relay, plus bronze in water polo. In 1928 he added gold in the 100 m freestyle and 4 × 200 m relay. The five golds therefore span two Olympic editions. [1]
Two careers worth distinguishing
When telling friends this story, start with a question: do they recognise him first as an athlete or an actor? Then connect the real name with the role that introduced him to another audience. The medal and film clapper in our illustration express that distinction; they are not historic objects from a local collection. We avoid a cartoon swinging on vines because it would shift attention from biography to caricature. The city is where his life began, not the setting for all his achievements.
Explore Freidorf without an invented address
This curiosity is an invitation to move beyond the central squares. Start by locating Freidorf on the map and considering its relationship with the centre you already know. We do not mark an unverified birth house. If you retell the connection, keep the name, birthplace and distinction between athlete and film character: those are enough for a memorable introduction.
